Algieri will shock the world and take down Pacquiao

MACAU — “Welcome to the Chris Algieri Show.”

That’s the title co-trainer Tim Lane would give Saturday night’s WBO welterweight championship fight between Algieri, the Long Island long shot, against Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao at the Cotai Arena at the Venetian Macao.

Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) is a 9-to-1 underdog in some circles. But along with co-trainers Lane and Keith Trimble, Algieri has remained confident he will score his second huge upset within the year and go from longshot to the Boy Wonder of boxing.
“I know I did all the hard work I needed to do,” Algieri said Saturday morning. “I’m ready to roll.”

Algieri, of Huntington, N.Y., won the WBO light welterweight title and the chance to fight Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) by defeating the heavily favored Ruslan Provodnikov last June at Barclays Center. After being knocked down twice in the first round and suffering a badly swollen right eye, Algieri captured a split decision by using his piston-like left jab, elusive foot work and overall boxing skills to pile up enough points on at least two judges’ scorecards to win.

The pick here is Algieri by decision, and the blueprint to beating Pacquiao and giving the “Chris Algieri Show” a happy ending isn’t much different from how he beat Provodnikov.

First, he must survive the first three rounds. Pacquiao figures to come out aggressively, looking to test Algieri’s chin and resolve. Provodnikov floored Algieri with a crushing left hook in the first round of their bout. Algieri got up with his right eye swelling, but was back on the canvas again when he took a knee to avoid further damage. He managed to survive the round and win the fight, but if Pacquiao hurts Algieri early, he has the experience and power to finish him.

Second, Algieri must establish his jab from the opening bell. At 5-foot-10, Algieri has a 4-inch height advantage and his 72-inch reach is 5 inches longer than Pacquiao’s. Keeping Pacquiao at the end of his long jab is the only way Algieri wins the fight — that’s no secret. Pacquiao will try to bob and weave his way inside Algieri’s reach and use his hand speed and power to do damage. But Algieri loves to call himself a Master Boxer, a label he must live up to have a chance against Pacquiao.

“The most difficult part about his career was to get him to box and not brawl,” Lane said. “But now he’s sticking and moving and knows how to fight. This fight couldn’t have come at a better time in his career. He’s ready to be a master boxer.”

Algieri also has to maintain his focus and confidence. That might have been rattled a bit when he initially weighed in above the contracted weight of 144. He weighed 144.2 pounds in his initial try and had to sweat off the excess before making weight on a second try, weighing in at 143.6. Pacquiao weighed 143.8.

The obstacles Algieri faces against Pacquiao are huge. He’s fighting in his first pay-per-view bout against an eight-time world champion in an arena of 14,000 fans, where only 30 or so will be rooting for him. Up to now, Algieri’s confidence has never wavered. But it’s easy for doubt to creep in once announcer Michael Buffer introduces the fighters and the bell rings. Despite what happens, Algieri has to maintain his focus and not get rattled like many underdogs do.

“His mind and the confidence he brings to the fight along with his ring generalship will be the key to this fight,” Trimble said.

Algieri also has to take advantage of the morning start. The fight is set to begin just before noon Macau time on Sunday to accommodate a Saturday night audience in the States. Algieri is a morning person and has been training from 10 a.m. to noon since his arrival here to get acclimated to the time. There will be no waiting around all day to fight and listen to what a huge underdog he is.

“The fight is going to be at our sparring time,” Lane said. “It’s perfect.”

Finally, Algieri must produce the best performance of his career.

“People haven’t seen the best of Chris,” Lane said. “The thing about Chris is the better the opposition the better he is. Manny has more experience than Chris, but he’s going to bring out the best in Chris. He’s the young lion and he will prevail.”

New Micro-Robots Can Swim Through Your Blood Vessels For Efficient Drug Delivery

Meet the research team from Max Planck Institute that has been conducting experiments with micro-sized robots, that can swim through body fluids and can either be used for the delivery of drugs or for medical relief by targeting a certain area.

The microbots that are being designed by the team can be classified as swimmers, which are scallop-like devices. The mechanism that they use for swimming is paddling for the non-Newtonian fluids such as blood and plasma (water acts the same way on a micro level as well). So in a nutshell these robots are moving through a fluid that has a variable viscosity based upon how much force is being exerted on it.

In order to achieve the above stated task, the microbots require a propulsion method that has to be incorporated into the tiny bodies while still allowing them to use the non-Newtonian fluid properties to their advantage. The process employed by the research team has been named as ‘modulation of the fluid viscosity upon varying the shear rate.’ The micro scallops, to explain it in simpler words, open and close the ‘shells’ to compress the fluid and push it out behind them thus helping the microbots to propel along.

Professor Peer Fischer, Leader of the Micro, Nano and Molecular Systems Research Group said, “The shell is only a few times larger than the thickness of a human hair. A liquid like water is about as viscous for these devices as honey or even tar is for us.” The team made use of magnetic actuators to open and close the shells of the microbots. If done at a reasonably fast pace, the microbots can easily swim across in the fluid.

The microbot has a size of 800 microns and this renders it capable of moving through the blood stream, lymphatic system or even in the surface of eyeballs. Also, the small size and relatively simple design allows for 3D printing them. These microbots are the future of drug delivery and medical treatment and we will soon be seeing them in mainstream medicine! Fingers crossed till then.
